 |
Kalari is the Malayalam
word for a special kind of gymnasium practiced in
Kerala known as Kalari Payattu. It is a traditional form of martial art that started in Kerala, Kalaripayattu is believed to be
one of the oldest existing martial arts. Kalaripayattu incorporates
various strikes, kicks, grappling, martial dance, and weaponry, as well as healing techniques. |
|
| The
inspiration of Kalaripayattu draws from the raw power, majestic strength and instinctive fighting techniques of
wild animals like lion, tiger, elephant, wild boar, crocodile etc.
The beauty of this art form lies in the harmony of art, science and medicine. The movements in Kalari are based on animal
movements and hence several poses are named after
that. It is believed to have developed in the jungles when hunters observed the fighting techniques of various animals. |
